How to Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

What is coolant? Coolant is the liquid your radiator uses to regulate the temperature of your engine block. It works to ensure that your engine’s temperature doesn’t rise above 212 degrees Fahrenheit or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If your coolant levels are low, your engine is at risk of freezing or overheating, both of which can result in catastrophic engine failure. Now that you know what coolant is, take a moment to read our guide on how to check coolant levels and when to check coolant levels. When to Check Coolant Levels

While you should change your coolant every 3 to 6 months, it’s best to learn how to keep tabs on your coolant levels. Many newer cars on Bellaire streets will feature a display screen where you can identify whether your coolant level is low. Otherwise, pop the hood and locate a reservoir next to your radiator. If you’re not sure about how to find your radiator, consult your owner’s manual. Once you’ve located your radiator and its coolant reservoir, it’s time to learn about how to check coolant levels.

The process is easy. There should be several notches on the side of the tank. If the fluid in the reservoir does reach the “Full” line, top it off with some coolant or a coolant/water mixture with a 50/50 ratio. While you’re down there, inspect the hoses connected to the radiator to make sure everything is properly connected and in good shape!

Other Coolant Tips

Now that you know what coolant is, how to check coolant levels, and when to check coolant levels, take a moment to review a few more handy tips:

  • Your coolant should have a viscosity that is thinner than oil and thicker than water. If you notice that the coolant is sludgy, it’s likely that you have an internal gasket leak.
  • Your coolant should either be green, yellow, red, or blue. If it’s starting to look brownish, it’s time to flush the system and change out the coolant.
